LP Record "Midnight Special" is one of two albums that Jimmy Smith recorded in a single day (the other being "Back at the Chicken Shack"), and it's a powerful album recorded by powerful musicians like Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums and, of course, Jimmy Smith on the organ.
LP Record Miles Davis's first classic quintet was formed in 1955 and is widely regarded as one of the finest combos in jazz history. Cookin' was the first of a series of four albums the group recorded between May and October 1956. The programme features some tracks that the quintet played live and others that were apparently improvised on the spot and had never been recorded before. Sonny Rollins' composition "Airegin" was recorded by Miles with Milt Jackson and Rollins on 29 June 1954 for the album Bags' Groove. "Blues by Five", credited to Miles and Red Garland, is most likely a blues written on the spot. Two tracks from the quintet's first Prestige LP have been added as a bonus.
LP Record The Oscar Peterson Trio: Affinity" is a classic jazz album released in 1962, showcasing the virtuoso talent of pianist Oscar Peterson alongside his trio. The album features a collection of eight tracks, mixing standards and original compositions. The opening track, "Tangerine", sets the tone with its lively and energetic interpretation, while "I'm A Fool To Want You" offers a more introspective and emotional performance. The album also includes a rendition of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby", demonstrating Peterson's ability to infuse his own style into the works of other jazz greats. "Gravy Waltz", which won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Theme that same year, adds a playful, bluesy feel to the record.
LP Record His first solo album for Blue Note, from 1962, featuring Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon. This release is a testament to his talent as both a pianist and a composer.
LP Record Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud, known in Germany as 'Lift to the Scaffold', is a legendary crime film that remains captivating even after 60 years. Louis Malle's 1958 masterpiece, featuring stellar performances from Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet, is an absolute classic of the genre. This release includes new, specially prepared notes by PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ author BRIAN MORTON and the renowned Paris JAZZ MAGAZINE. MILES DAVIS features on trumpet on all tracks, plus: Side A: Film Soundtrack: Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Frantic/Lift to the Scaffold): BARNEY WILEN, tenor saxophone, RENÉ URTREGER, piano, PIERRE MICHELOT, double bass, KENNY CLARKE, drums. Paris, 4 and 5 December 1957.
LP Record Lee Morgan was born on 10 July 1938 in Philadelphia. His career spanned from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Originally interested in the vibraphone, he eventually showed a growing enthusiasm for the trumpet. His main stylistic influence was Clifford Brown, who gave the teenager a few lessons before his untimely death in a car accident. At eighteen, Morgan joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band, where he remained for a year and a half until the group was forced to disband in 1958. He began his recording career in 1956 as a bandleader on the Blue Note label, for which he recorded a total of 25 albums.
LP Record Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool is a seminal album in the history of jazz. Released in 1957, the album helped to define the cool jazz movement and was characterised by Davis' innovative trumpet playing and arrangements. Critics praised the album for its unique sound, and many jazz musicians have cited it as an influence.
LP Record Eight months after his successful collaboration with Miles Davis on the album Kind of Blue, Evans recorded Portrait in Jazz with a new group (the Bill Evans Trio), an album that helped change the direction of modern jazz. Most notably, LaFarro's bass guitar moved away from being a mere accompaniment to an instrument almost equal to the piano (though not to the same extent as on later albums like Sunday at the Village Vanguard). This is one of Evans's more spirited and up-tempo albums (despite a few ballads).
LP Record On the album "Chet Baker in New York", Chet Baker is backed by an incredible lineup of musicians: Philly Joe Jones on drums, Al Haig on piano, the great Paul Chambers on bass guitar, and, on three tracks, tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. The recording was made in December 1958, and Chet Baker does not sing on it. The track "Soft Winds" was recorded during the same session but was not originally included on the LP, as it was intended for release on a compilation LP of various trumpeters titled "New Blue Horns". The track was added as a bonus to complete the original session.
LP Record Miles Davis's 1956 debut on Columbia Records is considered by jazz critics and fans to be a hard bop milestone and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. It features his first legendary quintet with John Coltrane. A re-released jazz classic. Limited audiophile edition. DMM mastering.
LP Record So much has been said and written about Miles Davis's album "Kind of Blue" that it is practically impossible to summarise all the essential information within the scope of these essays. We could simply state a few facts (the best-selling jazz album of all time worldwide). We could try to explain why it is the best jazz album of all time, but the music does that for you. As Bill Evans stated in the original liner notes, the band hadn't rehearsed any of these pieces before recording. Miles Davis wrote the themes just before the tape rolled, and the band improvised. The final result was fragile and wonderful.
LP Record As with many other artists, the very things that made Peterson most admired also tarnished his reputation. There was more than a little of Chopin in him, a fact that isn't immediately obvious in this wonderful collection of Cole Porter tunes. Like Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter seems an ideal source for Peterson, providing an unparalleled match for his verbal and musical dexterity. He's an improviser who finds the musical equivalents for glittering rhymes. Peterson's rhythmic flair and legendary talent are standout features of these performances. But what's most remarkable is the trio's irresistible swing, whose infectious energy breathes new life into these familiar songs.
LP Record George Avakian, who was running an ethnic music series at Columbia under the guidance of ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, wanted Gil Evans to work specifically with flamenco, as he held Spanish composers in high regard. Miles himself discovered Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez' and flamenco around the same time – thanks to an anthology brought back from Spain by actress Beverly Bentley, and a concert he attended with Frances Taylor. The result was a majestic piece of music, in which Gil Evans bypassed the kitsch of Rodrigo's original score and, with the help of Miles's impressive trumpet, held his own.
LP Record In 1960, the highly innovative Coltrane took a giant leap forward on his own – this was the first recording of a set written exclusively by 'Trane, and it achieved the breathtaking emotional intensity for which his live work was famous. His first album was created immediately after the recording of Kind Of Blue and features musicians who also shone on Miles' masterpiece: Paul Chambers, James Cobb and Wynton Kelly.
LP Record The album "My Favorite Things" was released in March 1961 and was the first album on which John Coltrane played soprano saxophone in addition to his tenor saxophone. His soprano plays the lead in two of the album's four tracks, including the unforgettable title track written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the musical The Sound of Music. An edited version of the fourteen-minute original became a radio hit that spring. The song's success helped introduce Coltrane to a wider audience, and the album has inspired later generations of fans. In recognition of its enduring artistic and historical significance, "My Favorite Things" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and certified Gold in 2018. Rhino is celebrating its 60th
