Sensor resolution indicates how many image points, known as pixels, a digital camera sensor consists of. This value is most commonly expressed in megapixels, with one megapixel corresponding to one million pixels. The number of pixels directly affects the level of detail the camera can capture. A higher-resolution photograph allows for printing in larger formats without visible loss of quality and also provides greater flexibility for cropping images, as even a small crop from the original photo can yield a sufficiently high-quality image. With an increasing number of megapixels, the data size of the resulting image files also grows.

Shutter speed, also referred to as exposure time, is the duration for which the camera's image sensor is exposed to light. The minimum shutter speed is the shortest possible interval for which the camera can keep the shutter open. This value is expressed in fractions of a second, such as 1/4000 s or 1/8000 s. Very short shutter speeds allow for "freezing" even very fast motion, which is useful when photographing sports, flying birds, or moving vehicles. The resulting image is therefore sharp and free of motion blur. Using a short shutter speed means that less light hits the sensor. To achieve a correctly exposed image, it is often necessary to compensate for this light loss, either by setting a lower aperture number, which opens the lens aperture wider, or by increasing the sensor's ISO sensitivity.

The maximum sequential shooting speed indicates the highest number of frames per second (fps) that the camera is capable of capturing when the shutter button is pressed continuously. This value is a key parameter especially when photographing moving subjects such as athletes, animals or vehicles, where a higher frame rate increases the chance of capturing the ideal moment. For interchangeable lens cameras (ILC), i.e. mirrorless cameras and SLRs, the maximum speed quoted refers to the sequential shooting speed of a mechanical shutter. Electronic shutter speeds may allow for higher shooting speeds in these devices, but may cause an undesirable rolling shutter effect. The achievable sequential shooting speed also depends on the specific camera model, the lens used and the current settings.

Sensor size refers to the physical dimensions of the chip inside a camera that captures light and creates an image. Generally, the larger the sensor's surface area, the more light it can capture. This results in better image quality in poor lighting conditions, with less digital noise. Digital noise is a visual disturbance resembling grain in old photographs. Sensor size also affects the depth of field. Larger sensors make it easier to achieve a shallow depth of field, an effect where the main subject is sharp and the background is blurred. Smaller sensors cause the so-called "crop factor". This means they only use the central part of the image projected by the lens, thus narrowing the field of view. A 50mm focal length lens on a camera with a smaller sensor will appear to have a longer focal length, such as 75mm. Common sizes include full-frame (corresponding to a 35mm film frame), smaller APS-C, and Micro Four Thirds. Compact cameras and mobile phones use significantly smaller sensors.

Image stabilization is a technology designed to suppress blur caused by unwanted camera movement during exposure, typically hand shake. This problem is more pronounced when shooting with longer shutter speeds, for example in low light, or when using lenses with high magnification, known as telephoto lenses. There are two main types of this technology. The first is optical stabilization, which works at a hardware level. Using gyroscopic sensors, it detects movement and physically shifts either an optical element in the lens or the image sensor itself within the camera body to compensate for shakes. In-body image stabilization is often referred to by the acronym IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization), and its advantage is that it works with any attached lens. The second type is electronic stabilization, which is a software solution. The camera records a slightly larger image than the final shot, and then uses software to shift the cropped image to counteract movement. Some devices combine both approaches to achieve better results.
