The Dutch company TomTom was founded in 1991 and initially focussed on the development of software and applications for business use. TomTom then switched to software development for portable devices, especially for PDAs, and in 1998 it was one of the leading producers of software for mobile devices, including the well-known applications EnRoute (later renamed Routeplanner) and Citymaps.
In 2001, at a time when GPS navigation systems began to gain popularity in the consumer sector, TomTom focused its attention on car navigation systems. In the June of the following year, it launched its first navigation application for PDA – TomTom Navigator. TomTom provided PDA manufacturers with software and a GPS chip supplied with a car mount to promote sales of PDAs in Europe. This allowed customers to use a full-fledged GPS system combined with a PDA, which was also much cheaper than traditional GPS navigation at the time.
Two years later TomTom started working on the follow-ip to Navigator. At this time it also started to think about branching out into the manufacture of hardware – specifically its own GPS system for cars. In 2004, it launched the first TomTom car navigation – the TomTom GO. Since then, TomTom has become one of the largest and best-known manufacturers of GPS navigation in Europe.
