With over 40 years' experience, Acer is a well-known global brand in the field of computer hardware. Acer ranks among the largest Asian companies in general and is the fourth largest IT company in the world.
Establishment of the Acer brand
It all began in 1976 when Stan Shin founded a small business, Multitech, which focussed on the manufacture of semiconductor devices. From the beginning, the company focussed on teaching and training in the field of microprocessors, so it is no surprise that their first commercially successful product was in this area. Thanks to the popularity of its products, Acer went on to dominate the Asian market during the 1980s.

During its history, Acer has experienced ups and downs, but today it is flying high. Acer laptops offer maximum performance at the best possible price, making them extremely popular across Europe.
Acer in Europe
At the turn of the 20th Century, the Acer brand was virtually unknown outside of Asia. On the European market, their products were only sold under big names like HP and DELL. In order to avoid duplicate products on the market during their expansion into Europe, Wistron was founded in the year 2000, which produced goods for a large number of important global companies. So it's possible to have a laptop without an Acer logo that was in fact made in an Acer factory!
Hardware production and multimedia
In 2001 a second major division of the company was created. The Communications and Multimedia division became an independent entity under the name BenQ. According to an official report, Acer was supposed to maintain the production of notebooks, computers and LCD monitors, while the newly founded company focussed on communication and entertainment. Today, however, the situation is completely different, with both companies competing with monitors, projectors, notebooks, and other computer accessories.
