Mluvčí společnosti SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) to potvrdila pro zahraniční web Gameindustry.biz. Sony tedy vynechává podruhé za sebou a odůvodňuje to tím, že vize organizátorů E3, tedy ESA (The Entertainment Software Association), se neshoduje s tou od SIE. Místo jedné velké události se Sony hodlá účastnit řady menších, na kterých bude postupně odhalovat a podporovat své projekty. Podle mluvčí společnosti SIE se máme na co těšit, jelikož Sony plánuje „stovky vzrušujících projektů jak pro stávající PS4, tak i pro chystanou konzoli PS5.“
Ve stejném článku mluvčí pro SIE zároveň tvrdí, že společnost organizátory E3 respektuje a že jsou si vědomi toho, že E3 výrazně pomohla produktům Sony dostat se do širšího povědomí, jenže za poslední dobu ztratila ESA přehled o tom, o čem by E3 vlastně měla být. Například prý SIE a Electronic Arts by si přály, aby E3 zůstala zaměřená pouze na oslavu videoher, kdežto jiné společnosti by chtěly z E3 mít spotřebitelský event.
Na tato slova posléze zareagovali pořadatelé E3 vyjádřením, ve kterém si v podstatě stojí za tím, že se E3 ubírá správným směrem a bude se dál ubírat i bez Sony.
