A toaster is a simple appliance for toasting bread. In addition to preparing homemade toasts without a drop of oil, it is also ideal for defrosting or heating pastries and bread. How to choose the right toaster? Read on to learn more.

How to choose a toaster?

We recommend selecting the toaster according to the following parameters.

Power consumption

The power consumption is measured in watts (W) and usually ranged between 650–2400W. The power gives you some idea about the toast preparation time, which is typically 2 to 3 minutes. The higher the power consumption, the shorter the toasting time.

Some toasters allow you to adjust the power output. This way you can ensure all toasts will be toasted just right.

Number of toasts

Before you buy your dream toaster, it is important to consider how many household members you will be feeding. Most models can handle 2-4 slices at a time, which is enough for small and medium-sized families. However, you can also find toasters with up to 6 slots, which will be appreciated by large households.

Some toasters also have a variable slot width, which lets you easily toast a thin or thick slice to a golden, crunchy perfection.

Toaster - maintenance and material

Most modern toasters have a removable crumb tray, which you just need to pull out and throw away the crumbs. Cheaper toasters without the tray need to be cleaned the old way, i.e. by turning them upside down and shaking the crumbs out. The outer part doesn't require much maintenance, but it still depends on the material.

Plastic toasters are easy to clean and cost less, but they aren't very durable and probably won't win any design awards.
Stainless steel toasters are durable and look properly high-end in your kitchen. The disadvantage is the higher price and more difficult maintenance.

If you want to bake two toasts together into one delicious snack, we recommend considering a sandwich maker.

What can a regular toaster do?

The most common functions of a classic toaster include:

Browning control allows you to set how much you want your bread toasted.
Stop button instantly interrupts the toasting process when pressed.
Defrost function can defrost frozen bread and make it taste nice and fresh.
Removable crumb tray collects crumbs to make the maintenance easier.

Browning control is not the same thing as a timer. The browning control numbers only serve to give you a rough idea about the toasting intensity.

Toaster - special features and functions

Some more expensive toasters have even more useful features.

Timer allows you to set the exact time for maximum baking precision.
Self-centering ensures that the toast always stays in the middle of the slot and gets toasted evenly.
LED light will alert you when the process is complete.
Warming basket attachment allows you to comfortably toast buns, rolls or croissants.
High lift pushes the toast out of the toaster higher than usual, making it easier to pull out.
