Intel - The Most Important Features of Intel Motherboards

Intel motherboards use sockets and chipsets from Intel. The socket and Intel chipset together make these motherboards compatible only with Intel processors.

Intel - The Socket Provides a Connection between the Motherboard and the Processor

The Intel socket is the connector through which the Intel motherboard communicates with the processor. Intel sockets differ in terms of size, the number of pins and compatibility with different processors. Therefore, the socket is one of the most important parameters of every motherboard.

  • Intel socket 1151 is used to connect 6th and 7th generation Intel processors (Skylake and Kaby Lake).
  • Intel socket 1151 Coffee Lake is used for Intel 8th and 9th generation processors (Coffee Lake and Coffee Lake Refresh).
  • Intel socket 2066 has been designed for the very powerful Intel Core i9 and Intel Xeon processors.
  • Intel socket 3647 is designed for the most powerful workstation processors.

The socket designation indicates the number of pins (connectors) of the socket. Intel 775 motherboard has a socket with 775 pins and Intel 1151 motherboard has 1151 pins.

Intel - Motherboards with Intel Chipsets

The Intel chipset provides communication between the processor and other computer peripherals on the motherboard. Chipsets differ in the number of ports and connectors, integrated technologies and clocking support. Intel chipsets can be divided according to the series to which they belong.

Intel 200 Series - The Ultimate Intel Chipset X299

The Intel X299 chipset from the Intel 200 series is designed for up to 18-core Intel Core i9 series processors, offering high performance for demanding applications and extreme multitasking. There is also support for clocking or Intel Optane memory. This Intel chipset is not compatible with the latest 9th generation Intel processors.

Intel 300 Series - Intel Z370 or Z390 Chipset

The Intel Z370 and Z390 chipsets have been designed for the powerful Intel 8th and 9th generation processors with up to 6-cores. They support clocking and the connection of multiple graphics cards, which is especially appreciated by demanding gamers. They have the highest number of connectors of any Intel 300 chipset.

The Intel H370 chipset offers similar connectivity options to the Z370 and Z390, but does not support clocking or multiple graphics cards.

Intel 300 Series - Intel Motherboards with B360 and H310 Chipsets Satisfy Less Demanding Users

The Intel B360 and H310 chipsets are designed for the Intel motherboards of office or multimedia computers for normal, undemanding users. They have limited connectivity options and do not support clocking or multiple graphics cards. The Intel B360 chipset has impressive Intel Optane technology.
