Helmets

A bicycle helmet is a must for all children and adolescents of 18 years and younger. Due to the significant risk of head injuries, however, wearing a helmet is recommended for all cyclists, both young and old. See below for some pointers on how to choose the right one for you.

Size

The size is determined by the circumference of your head as measured about 2.5 cm above your eyebrows. Sizes are listed in cm. Some models have only one size and are adjusted by the sizing wheel.

General sizing parameters for adult helmets:

S (50 - 54 cm)
M (54 - 58 cm)
L (58 - 62 cm)
XL (62 cm and more).

Helmet types

Road bike

Better aerodynamics, low weight, and efficient ventilation.
Can also be used for mountain bikes and rollerblades.

MTB

Equipped with a removable visor that protects your eyes against the sun and road debris.
Feature a more robust design and protect the back of the skull.
Can also be used for road bikes and rollerblades.

BMX/Freeride

Have a specific design providing maximum protection for downhill rides and rough terrain. Usually protect the head from the sides as well, including the nape of the neck and jaw.
Structurally they are more closed, have less ventilation, and higher weight.

Fastening

Dual straps - the first strap goes around your head, while the other is buckled under your chin.
Sizing wheel - a newer fastening mechanism, controlled by a sizing wheel on the back of the helmet's internal sizing ring. Twisting it in one direction expands the helmet, while twisting it in the opposite tightens it.

Other features

Insect mesh
Inner padding - provides greater comfort during long trips.
Removable interior lining - can be washed in a washing machine.
Antibacterial protection - contains silver ions, which kill bacteria and reduce unpleasant odour.
Number of vents - particularly important in long summer trips and children's helmets. A well-ventilated helmet reduces the risk of a heat stroke.

Child safety first

Children really shouldn’t ride a bicycle without a helmet. In order to make wearing it as fun as possible, children's helmets are manufactured in bright colours and with neat 3D effects. Crazy Safety, for example, makes cool Spiderman-themed bike helmets. In some countries, children and teenagers under 18 years of age are even legally obligated to wear a helmet when biking. Adults generally aren’t, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t. If you are a cyclist or skater and still don’t have one, you are exposing yourself to many unnecessary risks. Skateboard helmets are designed for urban surroundings and are aimed at fans of rollerblades and skateboarding. Skateboard helmets are made of hard plastic for maximum head protection during an unexpected fall on hard paved road surface.
