Key parameters when choosing a fixed focus lens

Focal distance

  • Wide angle (up to 35 mm) - lenses designed mainly for nature and architecture photography, where you can make full use of the wide angle shot.
  • Basic (up to 70 mm) - the photographed object is slightly zoomed in, which is ideal for news, portrait or documentary photography.
  • Telephoto lenses (over 70 mm) - the greater the focal length, the greater the zoom for distant objects. These lenses are ideal for outdoor animal photography and sport events.

Aperture

Aperture is indicated by the so-called aperture number. The lower the aperture number (e.g. f/1.8), the more light passes through the lens and on the sensor. This allows you to take pictures with a faster shutter speed in low light or to play creatively with depth of field.

Focus

Autofocus uses a system located in the body of the camera or the lens itself. Lenses equipped with an ultrasonic motor (SWD) offer the fastest focus mechanism. You will really appreciate it when taking action shots or videos.

Filter diameter

This diameter is important when using circular filters that are mounted on the front lens element. The internal thread diameter on the outside of the lens must match the diameter of the circular filter. The filters serve as protection against scratches (UV filters) or to reduce the amount of extra light and glare (polarising and ND filters).
