Blank Discs & Other Media

Compact discs or CDs were developed in 1979 as a direct successor due to the declining popularity of vinyl records. CDs originally had enough space to store 60 minutes of music. Sony quickly developed the technology extending capacity to 74 minutes and adding wider appeal to the new media format. At the turn of the 80s and 90s CDs drove the price of vinyl down. Compact discs now store 80 minutes with a capacity of 700 MB, and are also a popular medium for storing computer data.

DVD discs sind die nächste Generation von optischen Speichermedien.  Sie erschienen zuerst im Jahr 1996 auf dem japanischen Markt, und standen ein Jahr später dem Rest der Welt zur Verfügung.  Allerdings war der Preis diesen neuen DVD-R-Discs relativ hoch, und sie fanden schnell einen Konkurrenten in der Form von DVD+R-Discs, die billiger waren. Heute sind die Preise der beiden Disc-Typen praktisch gleich. DVDs wurden hergestellt in einer Weise, dass sie fast identisch mit dem CD-Format aussahen. Sie haben dieselbe Größe, und deswegen können DVD-Player und Laufwerke auch CDs lesen. Im Vergleich zu CDs jedoch haben Single-Layer-Discs bis zu 4,7 GB an Daten Platz.


Blu-ray ist die neueste Generation von Optical Discs. Im Frühjahr 2008 wurden sie der Nachfolger dem DVD-Format, ein Sieg über die rivalisierende Technologie HD DVD. Das Medium ist in der gleichen Größe wie CD und DVD, aber kann eine deutlich höhere Menge an Daten speichern. Blu-rays können 25GB von Daten in einem Layer, 50 GB in einem doppel-Layer, und bis auf 80 GB auf einem zweiseitigen Doppelschicht-Varianten speichern.
