The downside is that people around you can hear the sound if you listen too loud. On the other hand, closed-back headphones for your smartphone or tablet feature special ear cushions that dampen ambient sound.

Mobile Phone and Tablet Headphones—What Design Is Best?

  • Earbuds are ideal if you want light and comfortable headphones for home and travel.
  • Canalphones offer the same comfort as earbuds with extra ambient noise cancelling due to the rubber extensions. They are also good for listening to music when running outdoors.
  • Ear loop headphones are earbuds or canalphones with a clip or hook that fixes them behind the ears. Perfect for athletes.
  • Over-ear headphones feature a head bridge and cover the entire ear. They provide significantly better sound performance and easily isolate ambient noise.
  • On-ear headphones are larger and mainly for home use, where their increased size allows for enhanced sound technology that doesn't fit into a pair of canalphones or earbuds.

What Is the Difference Between Wireless and True Wireless Headphones?

You can connect wired headphones through a 3.5 mm jack, USB-C, or Lightning connector. Wireless headsets are divided into two categories.

  • Headphones with a USB Connector don't use a cable to connect to your phone—the left and right earpieces connect with a wire or head bridge.
  • True Wireless headphones are completely wireless. Both the left and right earpiece have their own battery, so they are not connected and work independently.

Another method of wireless listening is through radio frequency headphones. This method is mainly suitable for listening via a computer or TV as the transmitter connects via USB. NFC technology is used to pair wireless headphones.

Get a Headset with a Microphone to Call through Your Favourite Apps

A mobile phone headset with a microphone lets you make calls through apps, including Skype and Messenger. When choosing, you should focus on the type of built-in microphone.

  • A directional microphone records sound from one direction and significantly reduces noise and ambient noise.
