Sojo – a small ceramics workshop in the Pamkasi district. A unique space where one can heal a tired mind.
The main character, Jeong-min, has burned out after years of hard work that brought her to the brink of exhaustion, so she abruptly resigns from her job.
She shuts herself away in her newly rented flat for months. After months of isolation, she runs outside one summer day with a scream, ready to finally get her life moving again. While searching for a good café, she accidentally wanders into a ceramics studio in a back alley in the Pamkasi district. The workshop draws her in with its warmth, the mixed aroma of clay and coffee, the kind owner Jo-hee, and members with similarly challenging lives. The kiln, capable of reaching hotter temperatures than the summer weather outside, begins to thaw Jeong-min's frozen mind.
The people in the workshop share their troubles and create ceramic works from clay as the seasons change several times outside the windows. Jeong-min's fiery mind gradually cools. In the end, it is neither icy nor scorching, but just right – warm. Her wounds heal, she learns to be a better person, and even finds love.
This uplifting novel from an acclaimed debut author is about finding new friends, taking up new hobbies, coming to terms with the past, and what it’s like to finally slow down in today's hectic world.
