Lazar
On the edge of a dark forest, somewhere in the decaying Hungarian Empire, stands a lonely castle belonging to the aristocratic von Lázár dynasty – a place where not only property and name are inherited, but also madness, anxiety, and secrets that must not be spoken of. It is here, during the feast of the Epiphany, that Lajos is born, a strangely translucent child with watery eyes, whose arrival seems to reopen one of the family's old wounds.
In this at times hypnotic novel, Nelio Biedermann has created a story that blends poetry, a Gothic atmosphere, psychological depth, and echoes of magical realism. Baron Sándor Lázár dreads the madness that once consumed his mother and brother. His wife, Mária, trapped in a loveless marriage, learns to lie masterfully to protect her son's secret. And Lajos, a sensitive boy growing up among the ghosts of the past, gradually learns that family inheritance is not just a matter of blood.
The novel is set at a time when the old world of the Habsburg monarchy is collapsing under the pressure of modernity, nationalism, and approaching wars. However, the author captures these major historical events primarily through the intimate dramas of his protagonists. His narrative style is sensory, imaginative, and extraordinarily captivating.
Lázár is a novel about hereditary guilt, the fear of one's own origins, and the desire to escape a fate determined long before birth.
