David Prokop, a criminal investigator at the Brno police station, has little reason to trust local Kurdish traders, who often act in their own interests. However, it looks like they could put the pedal to the metal on a dangerous Chechen fundamentalist who is heading from the war-torn Caucasus to the Czech Republic.
Because of his work, David Prokop encounters mafiosi and his own sources, and he soon finds himself in conflict with investigators from the Interior Minister's Inspectorate, who try to discredit him. With an enticing case, he awakens a forgotten life energy that helps him fight old demons from his past. Prokop soon becomes just a small link in a confusing game in which everyone wants to win, but few play fair.
The author Eduard Krainer drew on almost 25 years of experience as an operative in the Police of the Czech Republic and the Military Intelligence. His writing is inspired by his rich experience of foreign missions, which have taken him to various parts of the world, often to war-affected areas where no one can be trusted.

Eduard Krainer (* 1971) makes his living as a teacher and security consultant. In nearly 25 years, he had been through a number of security forces from the police to the intelligence services, and all the while he knew full well that once he handed in his last official record, he would be doing quite a different kind of writing. He debuted with the novel The Rule of Three Sources, the opening volume of the spy trilogy The Operative. He derived the title of the book from one of the basic operational rules that valid information is only that which is verified from three independent sources. The book met with an enthusiastic response from readers. In the second part of The Wretched of Kabul, about the kidnapping of a Czech couple in Afghanistan, he drew on his own experience - during his time in the Afghan mission he was actively involved in the search for two Czech women kidnapped in 2013 in the province of Baluchistan in Pakistan. Eduard Krainer is currently working on the third volume of the series, entitled The Jungle Hides the Bodies, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
