Discover a world where the very thought of wanting to go outside is a deadly crime. A world reduced to dozens of floors of steel and concrete, buried miles underground. In the giant Silo, an unforgiving order reigns. People work according to castes, are subject to strict fertility controls, and must never doubt. And if they do? They are sent up to the surface, into a toxic wasteland, where they face instant death before the eyes of the others. But what if everything people see on their screens is just a gigantic lie, repeated a thousand times over? What if the most toxic truth isn't hidden outside, but right among them, protected by those who promised them survival? Juliette Nichols has her doubts, too. As a renowned mechanic in the deepest levels of the Silo, she ensures the humming generators provide air for the last 10,000 survivors on a ruined Earth. But when a series of mysterious deaths and vile betrayals forces her to rise to the position of sheriff, she discovers a terrifying truth...
When the author published a shorter story for e-book readers in 2011, he had no idea he was laying the cornerstone of one of the most influential post-apocalyptic series of the new millennium. Silo offers an extraordinarily claustrophobic, unsettling, and uncomfortably believable descent into the darkness of a totalitarian society. This phenomenal bestseller about manipulation and power in a labyrinth full of secrets was adapted into a 2023 series by Apple TV+, starring Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Tim Robbins, and other acting stars.
One of the great draws of dystopian literature is that its readers are in on the secret: we know what the world once was, and we get to watch as the characters try to uncover it. Howey gives us more than enough of that. No wonder the book found an audience so quickly.

This is the book I’m going to be shoving at all my friends, telling them, ‘You have to read this.’ It’s just that good.

(* 1975) This American writer became famous as a commercially very successful author who sold film rights without needing anything more than a laptop. Alongside his studies, he also took an interest in computers in his youth, and to save on rent at university, he bought a houseboat, which eventually led him to a job as a sea captain. During his travels, he found a wife who then took the wind out of his sails. Instead of wandering the world, he began to wander his own imagination and write stories about the daring Molly Fyde, for whom in the twenty-fifth century there is nothing she can't do, or at least won't try. From 2009, he began to publish his stories in electronic form via Kindle Direct Publishing directly on Amazon. More texts soon followed, until in 2011 he published the introductory short story from a post-apocalyptic world where humanity survives in captivity within vast underground shelters. He then set his first book, Silo (2012), and the subsequent titles Shift (2013) and Dust (2013) in the same environment. Director Ridley Scott showed interest in a film adaptation of the story, which eventually resulted in a successful series produced by Apple TV+. His other works include The Sand Chronicles duology, comprising the titles Sand (2014) and Across the Sand (2022), the novels I, Zombie (2012), The Shell Collector (2014), and the book Beacon 23 (2015), also known for the TV series of the same name starring Lena Headey in one of the main roles.
