Šlachta - Thirty years under oath

A personal confession about Robert Šlachta's life, not only his personal life, but especially his professional life.

When he came to me, he said: "You'll get a position, you can apply for something, but you'll keep your mouth shut." And I didn't want to shut up because I knew where it was going.

Robert Šlachta is a former Czech customs officer, from January 2008 to June 2016 Director of the Organized Crime Detection Unit (ÚOOZ), from August 2016 to November 2019 Deputy Director of the Investigation Department of the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic.

Robert Šlachta gives a personal account of his extraordinary life, not only his personal life but especially his professional life, through an interview with the well-known Czech investigative journalist Josef Klíma. He speaks about hot topics and cases (Nagyová, Pitr, Vidkun, Bereta and many others) that he could not talk about during his service.

Excerpt from the book (from the foreword by Robert Šlachta)
I started thinking about writing a book at the time when I finished my work at the ÚOOZ and the police. There were many more reasons to "sign off". But the crucial one was to try to explain to people what we were and what kind of work we were doing.
Many times I heard about myself, what a demon I was and what I was supposed to do and especially for whom. Perhaps this confession of mine will answer some of your questions. Pepa Klíma collaborated with me on the title. In the beginning we were looking for a way to get together, but I firmly believe that we found it in the course of time. He was probably very busy with me, and I have to say that our police talk doesn't really match the journalistic one.
You can judge for yourself how successful this collaboration has been. Throughout my career I have met many people I have had the privilege of working with. I know what we did and how we did it and that some of them left without being thanked for their hard work. So I would like to thank you all very much at this point.
This book would not have been possible without the help of my closest collaborators. After so many years, it was often hard to remember exactly how it was and what were just pub stories, often modified...
Don't expect any sensationalism or a "Šlacht report" in the book. It's really my confession of what I experienced and how I felt. I am, of course, bound by confidentiality, so you can understand that I could not reveal everything. Also, I didn't want to describe things that are written about almost daily in the media and that are common knowledge. Pepa Klíma asked me to select the major cases that shaped my career in the police and later in the customs administration. It was very difficult to select cases mainly from the earlier period and describe them in a way that remained interesting and readable. The important ones from the period of the ÚOOZ concerned cases that were often publicized. I have tried to describe them from a slightly different point of view than you know from the media.
These cases were made by people, they had their lives, and I have to say that I often admired them for what they did. And then what happened to those cases in court and what was the outcome? I have often screamed internally at the injustice when I saw what some were able to do with the cases in court despite the content and evidence. Nevertheless, I have told my people again and again that they work for the citizens, and unfortunately the problems are part of that...

A few words from the co-author of the book Josef Klíma
When I was offered to do a book interview with Robert Šlachta, I didn't really want to do it. Unlike a lot of other cops, I had never met him in person before, I only knew him from the media - which half praised and half condemned him. She praised him for it, that he's dedicated his entire life to being a police officer, that he's not on vacation, living in a hostel, working around the clock, Get out of here, Whoa, whoa, whoa, and requires others to do the same. She denounced him as a stuntman, cowboys, partisan, who's mostly jerking off, works regardless of regulations, deploy as many wiretaps as possible and hope that there's something for everyone eventually... But then I realized that's what interests me about Schlacht. The ambivalence, also expressed by his half-light and half-dark face on the cover. Whether he's like this or that. I only agreed on one condition, ...that all the uncomfortable questions will be answered in the book, that the press has heaped on him over the years, and I'm gonna ask as many people as I can, who had contact with him, to summarize, what they think of him. For better or worse. Those who love him and those who can't think of a name for him. Robert Šlachta agreed, and we started talking.

They wrote about the book Thirty Years Under Oath

I could hardly believe it while I was reading, how corrupt the system can be, from the bribed, of the rank and file, to judges and ministers, I was further surprised by the animosity and fighting between the various police departments, between the so-called. good cops and bad cops. The book is very similar in theme to Mr. Kmenta's books, the style of the journalist is undeniable. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes criminology and the history of crime in the Czech Republic, both authors did a great job.
