This collection of short stories presents an impressive cross-section of historical milestones of the 20th century seen through the lens of everyday life. The heroes of the stories, sensitively performed by Pavel Soukup, live their (un)ordinary lives between the Black Sea port of Odessa, anonymous skyscrapers and cheerful cabarets in New York, and echoes of memories of the bitter war years. The author presents in detail and almost cinematically brief - sometimes only fleetingly sketched, but all the more believable - the stories of those to whom fate has assigned wandering as a life destiny.
Mark Polevoj was born in 1932 in the famous Black Sea port of Odessa, which was, among other things, an important Russian Jewish enclave. After studying for a year at the famous Soviet film school VGIK, he finally had to give up his artistic career for family reasons and studied economics. He later worked as an economist in a typical Soviet engineering enterprise. In 1991, he and his family moved to Prague, where he works, among other things, in the local Jewish community. He originally started writing short stories in Odessa. However, he could only start publishing in Bohemia.
