I know a bloke who failed his school-leaver exams first time round cos of this book. Exupéry must've been turnin' in his grave, he really must've. If this version 'ad been around back then, things would've turned out different in that Pilsen classroom. But you can't change history, you can't teach a Pilsener not to speak like a Pilsener, and you'll never stop gettin' handsy with Vošahlík. This here little prince is the first tome that'll hopefully show us that even in our dialect, you can scribble some decent literature. And why not, since they printed the first love letter in the Czech region 'ere. And for a non-Pilsener, all it takes is a few pints of 12-degree beer, a weekend with their partner's Pilsen grandma and grandad, and suddenly they're walkin' over yonder, catching a bream on the Saturn, and quoting This 'ere Little Prince.
The cult classic book by French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has been translated into more than 350 languages and dialects. Everyone knows it. Collector of The Little Prince book editions, Martina Dlabajová, decided to translate the tender story into the Pilsen dialect, in which every sentence has its own humour, flair, and honesty. She was assisted in her work by translators Daniel Bečvář, also a social geographer, and Anna Maurin, an interpreter from French. The book is accompanied by illustrations from Nika Kulik.
The resulting work will be enjoyed not only by people from Pilsen. The layman will learn the local dialect, the expert will expand their knowledge, and everyone will gain a new perspective on the well-known story from an unusual angle.
