High in the Ozark hills lies the isolated town of Tin Mountain. Everywhere is far from here. It is said that this is why some local women have managed to preserve their knowledge of herbalism and a rare intuition that others have forgotten. They have been passed down from generation to generation for many centuries. If people were anxious, these powerful women were there for them, but if they didn't need them, they looked down on them and excluded them from their midst.
Gracelynn Doherty is the latest in a line of these extraordinary women, helping her grandmother to heal those who, despite superstition, still seek them out, whether for treatment of arthritis or a broken heart. But when the preacher Bellflower arrives in the town and promises miraculous healings, an end to hunger and prosperity, he captivates the whole town with his promises. A curse from the past catches up with Grandma Deidre and clouds begin to gather over Tin Mountain. Gracelynn must decide whether to save herself and flee Tin Mountain, or face a vengeful preacher whose unholy mission is to destroy her.

The main antagonist, a demon going by three different names, seems incredibly real. So real that the scenes from this novel stuck in my mind for days.
- Historical Novels Review

Kennedy has woven an achingly beautiful tale full of dark rural settings, strong women and chills-inducing suspense. The fates of Deidre and Gracelynn will really take you by the heart and stay with you until the last page.

Paulette Kennedy is from the Ozark Plateau region of Missouri, However, he currently lives with his family and a large menagerie of abandoned and neglected pets, to whom she provided a new home, in sunny Southern California, where the mountains sometimes, if the weather turns out to be really good, ...the fog will roll in.
