Technology ECC checks transparently and in real time integrity of data stored in memory. It is able to detect and correct an error in a single bit error and detect two bits. Some memory controllers can in cooperation with ECC memory repair the errors of greater magnitude. Most server board requires ECC memory support.
Memory has a separately addressable area (memory rank) with bus width 72 bits (64 bits of data and 8-bit ECC code). Most of server chipsets has limited memory rank or directly specified memory configuration for each slot, so consider when buying a watch that figure with respect to future upgrades - if you reach the full rank of memory on the motherboard, you can not add another module even if some remained free memory slots.
