"So do I have malaria or not?" This is an authentic account from South Sudan, the world's youngest nation, whose territory has been plagued by armed conflict for decades.
At the beginning of 2017, when the country was hit by a wave of critical food shortages, surgeon Tomáš Šebek went on a Doctors Without Borders mission to places where infectious and tropical diseases thrive. Having experienced trauma surgery in the cradle of voodoo in Haiti and war medicine in northern Afghanistan, he and his colleagues find themselves in an environment where the traditional healer and his alternative approach to the patient are far more respected than the Western-trained physician.
Compared to fixing fractures with paper or pouring boiling water on them, the surgical team's reputation in the eyes of the locals can only be raised by performing the first surgery on the brain of a South Sudanese teenager in the absolute wasteland surrounding the hospital in Agok. Tomáš Šebek's writings, accompanied by captivating photographs, present a unique view of places that you will not learn about in the media.
Tomas Sebek (born. 1977) is a Czech surgeon who is a regular participant in Doctors Without Borders missions. He studied general medicine at the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. In 2010, he went on his first mission, to Haiti. He returned there two years later, then completed two missions in Kunduz, Afghanistan. The diary accounts of his missions, originally intended only for his circle of friends, were a great success with readers in book form. His last assignment with Doctors Without Borders was in South Sudan, and it is this stay that is the subject of the book African Winter. He received the Award for Bravery from the Association of Czech Physicians.
