Anyone can get burnout

Stories and reflections on the syndrome affecting people of (not only) current generations

“So diligent and clever, how did this happen to you?” Burnout syndrome proves that hard work isn't just a virtue. Giving 150% at work goes unappreciated. Presenter Aleš Cibulka, mezzo-soprano Dagmar Pecková and national sports representative Olga Šípková openly describe how their maximum efforts led them to hell.

The topic is expertly handled by Dr Radkin Honzák and publicist Agáta Pilátová. Learn from the mistakes of others – if you want to burn bright, not burn out. The book launches the Destigma series, which, with the contribution of well-known personalities, aims to change the perception of various types of mental health problems.

Dr Radkin Honzák

He graduated from the Faculty of General Medicine in Prague. After four years at the Psychiatric Hospital in Kosmonosy, he joined the then Institute for Human Nutrition Research in Krč as a psychiatric consultant. This institute was later integrated into IKEM, where he still works in the outpatient clinic and in the transplant programme. In connection with this, he was a member of the CAHBI ethics committee in Strasbourg for nine years. He focused on patients with gastroenterological, cardiovascular and nephrological problems, which led him to psychosomatics. After 1989, he led the Department of Medical Psychology, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University for ten years. He then spent a decade at the Department of Psychiatry at the IPVZ and later at the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital.

Vyšehrad has published several editions of his book-length interview with Renata Červenková, We All Live in a Madhouse, with the subtitle The Present Through the Eyes of a Psychiatrist, and his latest book, Psychosomatic Primer, has been a huge success. Radkin Honzák also aptly comments on current issues on his blog at www.aktualne.cz. He summarises his lifelong experience in the sentence: “A human can endure more than an animal, you just have to give them the opportunity.”

Aleš Cibulka

A Czech television and radio presenter and publicist. He worked for TV Nova for two years, where he hosted Snídaně s Novou (Breakfast with Nova). He studied at the Higher Professional School of Acting.
He later became a contributor and then an employee of Czech Television, where he hosted the programme Dobré ráno s ČT (Good Morning with ČT). He also appeared in the children's quiz show Baťoh. He currently hosts O češtině, a programme dedicated to the Czech language.
