Every day, infectious diarrhoea takes the lives of 1,438 babies and toddlers. Needlessly. Diarrhoeal diseases are the most common cause of child deaths worldwide and are directly linked to contaminated water. Young children in developing countries suffer from diarrhoea an average of 3× a year. They lose essential nutrients necessary for proper growth and development. Diarrhoea is therefore one of the main causes of child malnutrition. Malnourished children have a reduced immune system and are more easily reinfected with diarrhoea. Yet we have long known how to treat and prevent infectious diarrhoea.

Diarrhoea is a symptom of an infection caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites, most of which are transmitted through contaminated water. The infection is more widespread where there is inadequate sanitation and hygiene, and a lack of access to safe water for drinking, cooking, and washing. Key measures to prevent infectious diarrhoea include access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation, hand washing with soap, breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, washing food, personal hygiene, and vaccination against rotavirus.

We know what we're doing, join us
People in Need is fighting infectious diarrhoea and child malnutrition in four African countries: Ethiopia, Congo, Angola, and Zambia. Our approach is comprehensive, from ensuring the availability of drinking water and helping to organise the maintenance of the entire water management system, to providing health training where we explain the link between sanitation and the spread of infection to people in remote villages, to supporting the expanded cultivation of resilient and nutritious crops that will feed children and prevent malnutrition.
