Zhang Yimou, director of lavish epics, took the theme of the Coen brothers' noir debut Unnecessary Cruelty (1983) and transformed it into an exaggerated costume farce set in a desert inn in ancient China. As in the original film, everything begins with the husband's plan to destroy his philandering wife.
