One of the greatest adventures in human history
Fifty years ago, half a billion people were glued to their televisions to watch the live landing of the Apollo 11 crew on the Moon. Shortly after, astronaut Neil Armstrong uttered the famous words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," successfully completing what was perhaps the most daring expedition since Christopher Columbus's voyage.
But just as fascinating was the era that preceded this flight, and the life story of the man who was privileged to take that first "human" step on the Moon.
The story of First Man begins in 1962, when he started working as a pilot for NASA and had to cope with a personal tragedy: the death of his two-year-old daughter from an incurable disease. For a job that involved constantly dicing with death, NASA could hardly have chosen a more suitable candidate. Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) isn't a space cowboy who takes risks willingly with a swaggering nonchalance; on the other hand, he doesn't panic in life-threatening situations. His defining characteristic is his calmness. Calmness as he plummets towards the Earth in a test module, calmness when he answers his son's question about whether he will return from the mission, and calmness as he takes that historic first step. The counterpoint to this calmness is the absolute turmoil of his wife (Claire Foy) and her internal drama as she experiences his every success and the possibility that he might never return.
