From the ashes
A heartbreaking story of a broken childhood and the inevitable disintegration of a family.
The three brothers return to the family cottage by the lake, where none of them has ventured for twenty years. They bring with them an urn with ashes and are about to fulfill their mother's unexpected last wish.
However, their journey together will take them not only through a familiar landscape, but also through time. Suddenly, they are boys again, with tanned legs and eager eyes, competing for their father's favour and their mother's fickle love, with only each other in the world and perhaps no one at all. Now they stand here as young adult men, so strangers to each other, yet inextricably bound by the shackles of the past.
The fateful place inexorably brings to the surface carefully buried memories and bitterness that drives a wedge between the brothers again. How can a home riddled with uncertainty like a minefield scar a child's mind? And what really happened that summer when everything fell to pieces?
They wrote about the book From the Ashes
We find ourselves actually right there in the lake house, walking in the changing light along the forest paths among the bugs and birds. The depiction of nature here takes on almost ancient rhythms [...]. From the Ashes is a dense and mature novel.
