Secondary school student Tobias is struggling with school and with life. He's failing several subjects, can't understand why he finds learning so much harder than everyone else, and is often the target of ridicule and bullying from his classmates. Home life is even more challenging – his father buries himself in his work and the past, his sister is dealing with her own problems, and Tobias feels like he doesn't belong anywhere.
When his father develops an experimental educational android named Dami, he asks Tobias to be the one to test it. His job is to teach it how to react to human emotions and appear empathetic. Dami is equipped with mirror circuits and is supposed to merely observe and imitate emotions.
But the time they spend together begins to change them both. In Dami, Tobias finds someone who doesn't judge him and knows how to listen, while Dami gradually starts to transcend the boundaries of his code. He understands the meaning of words and begins to act on his own decisions. What was meant to be a simulation of empathy turns into something real.
A bond forms between Tobias and Dami that was never meant to exist. And the more human Dami becomes, the clearer it is that their closeness could have consequences: for him, for Tobias, and for a world that isn't ready for something like this. Tobias must discover that perhaps you don't become human by being born that way, but by learning how to love.
