Jesus the Son of Man
Translated from the English original by Marie Čapková
Another work by the Lebanese writer Kahlil Gibran, author of the famous The Prophet
The renowned Lebanese author Kahlil Gibran, with his unmistakable, poetic-mystical style, brings the personality of Jesus of Nazareth to life. In his book, he seeks to look at the figure of the God-man through the eyes of those who met him and who offer their most varied testimonies about his life. In the individual chapters, his disciples, followers, women, aristocrats, scholars, merchants, but also opponents and enemies, speak of him. Their memories flash with reports and sayings from the New Testament. However, the narratives of the individual characters become, above all, a space for Gibran's own reflections, in which he not only professes his intimate relationship with the Son of Man, but also meditates on many of the eternal themes of human life. Each chapter, much like the speeches of Gibran's famous Prophet, is thus always a specific mirror of the relationship between the world, man, and God.
Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) was born in Bsharri, northern Lebanon, into a poor Maronite Christian family. As a child, he moved with his mother to Boston, America. After a few years, he returned to Lebanon to study Arabic literature. Later, under dramatic circumstances, he returned to America. From 1904, Kahlil Gibran published in Arabic, first in newspapers, and from 1905 in book form. Vyšehrad publishing house has already published: Sand and Foam (2001), The Wanderer (2006), Tears and Laughter (2006), The Earth Gods (2007), The Madman and Other Parables (2008), Broken Wings (2011), The Forerunner (2013), The Valley of the Nymphs (2014) and The Prophet (7th edition 2019).
