He's like a ghost... Where is he hiding?
A large Chinese cargo ship with refugees and human slaves approaches the port of Long Island. The US authorities have managed to find out that an internationally wanted criminal nicknamed Ghost is on board and have therefore asked for the cooperation of the renowned detective Rhyme and his assistant Sachs. The coastguard sets out to arrest the Ghost, but the ship probably explodes on purpose and the Ghost escapes on a raft. However, other rescue vessels are also coming ashore, which the Ghost sees as a threat and begins to gradually murder his former co-passengers. Fortunately, two families survive the rampage, while the criminal disappears into the labyrinth of New York's Chinatown, where he receives protection from the underworld. Rhyme has no choice but to fully immerse himself in Chinese culture if he wants to uncover clues: either he succeeds or he perishes.
