An underground lift takes Thomas to a meadow surrounded by high walls. He can’t remember anything at all; at first, he can't even recall his own name. Upon arrival, he is greeted by a group of other young men who have already met the same fate. Every morning, a huge gate opens in the wall, granting entry to a vast and ever-changing maze. The best and bravest runners search for a way out, gradually mapping the different sections of the labyrinth. They only have the daylight hours to do so; in the evening, the gate closes, and anyone who doesn't return in time will not survive within the labyrinth's walls. All that remains of them is a crossed-out name carved on the wall. At night, the labyrinth transforms into a terrifying place filled with all sorts of traps, and the probability of surviving inside it is practically zero.
Despite this, Thomas is constantly drawn to the maze. Perhaps it's because he's the only one having strange dreams about the past and a mysterious organisation hidden behind the acronym W.C.K.D. If he can piece together the fragments of his past using the clues in the maze, he might just discover his true purpose and a way to escape.
