The Godfather of Computer Games Reminisces About His Career, or the History of Video Games
Video games currently represent the largest part of the entertainment industry. Yet just a few decades ago, it was fun for a few geeks from technical fields. But the rise of new computer entertainment wasn' t just driven by the increasing availability of technology — it' s also a story of entrepreneurship, ingenuity, and original ideas. And the ideal narrator for this story is Sid Meier, the man who was at the origin and rise of computer games: He studied programming in the 1970s, founded the influential MicroProse studio in the early 1980s, and then went on to publish cult games such as Pirates!, Railroad Tycoon, and the hugely successful Civilization series. Meier was simply present at everything important, and so his memoirs serve partly as a chronicle of the development of the gaming industry. However, the famous designer doesn' t just stop at memories — he also shares his experiences with the creative process, reveals what good game design depends on, and explains player psychology.
They wrote about the book:
A fascinating look at the career of a legendary game designer. The book is full of stories and development principles that Meier has developed over the years.
- Jason Schreier, Bloomberg
To me, Sid Meier represents the foundation of today' s gaming industry.
- Phil Spencer, head of Xbox
