One of the book's first meditations reads: “We have to fail, to fall, to be thrown into the very core of the mystery of our existence, otherwise we have no chance of finding our true path.” These words summarise the fundamental idea of all 365 meditations in this daily guide to male spirituality: that true wholeness and holiness can only be found through a certain kind of suffering or surrender. Perhaps everyone has to deal with something dark, some kind of wound, in their life. Rohr acknowledges this pain and touches on it directly in his book—bluntly, yet healingly. Although we are taught today that falling, failure, and suffering are bad, in the author's view, pain, in whatever form it takes, is inevitable: it is the only gateway through which true, real self-knowledge can be reached. And this knowledge is also the starting point for a true encounter with God. To become a better, more complete person means to meet one's own darkness and allow it to give way to a total transformation of the self.
Richard Rohr (b. 1945), an American priest and Franciscan of German descent, is one of the most famous figures of spiritual renewal in the USA. He is the founder of the New Jerusalem Community and director of the Centre for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is the author of numerous books on male spirituality, initiation, and contemplative prayer.
