The Coronavirus Pandemic Day by Day in a Unique Documentary Book
The coronavirus crisis is unprecedented in modern history: Billions of people found themselves in quarantine, tens of millions were infected, and hundreds of thousands died. This is the story of the pandemic as it has never been told before. What influenced the decisions that affected the lives of millions? Who is the man who prompted the Czech authorities to take decisive action? Two experienced journalists take you behind the scenes of the events that turned the Czech Republic and the world upside down, through the eyes of healthcare workers, patients, and top politicians.
In December 2019, doctors in Wuhan, China, began to encounter an unknown illness. Soon, social media was filled with speculation about a new disease. The number of cases grew slowly, but a few months later, the coronavirus pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Through stories based on interviews with key figures of the crisis—from top politicians to frontline healthcare workers—get a behind-the-scenes look at the events that turned the Czech Republic and the world upside down.
The authors agreed to write the book back in March, when the world was gripped by the first wave of the pandemic, which, besides China, also severely affected northern Italy and North America. The Czech Republic avoided high numbers of infected, hospitalised, and deceased individuals in the spring. Why? The book by Gibiš and Kubal also provides an answer to this, including revealing for the first time the name of the mysterious man, Pavel Řehák, who allegedly convinced first the Minister of the Interior, then the Minister of Health, and finally the Prime Minister that it was necessary to implement rapid and strict measures against the spread of the virus.
