The holiday season is beginning in Oslo, and the city has been hit by a summer heat wave. In an apartment near the cemetery of Our Savior, something starts dripping from the ceiling into a pot of boiling potatoes. Tiny black clumps form in the water.
At that time, Harry Hole is lying on the floor in his apartment on Sofiina Street - drunk, abandoned and suspended. In a frantic but unsuccessful hunt to convict his police colleague Tom Waaler of murder, he betrayed everyone close to him. He will be out of work in four weeks. Just then the phone rings. The head of the homicide department calls Harry in to make a strange discovery - a murdered woman with a severed finger.
Harry Hole gets his last case. He will work on it together with the only colleague who is not on vacation at the moment, Tom Waaler, who will make Harry a certain offer. Soon after, Lisbeth, the wife of the famous producer Willy Barli, disappears without a trace. He is preparing the premiere of the musical My Fair Lady, in which his wife was supposed to play the lead role. And a severed finger arrives at the police station in an envelope.
Is Lisbeth' s husband behind her disappearance, as the so-called. Hole' s first law, or someone else? It soon becomes clear that the police are dealing with a serial killer. Can Harry decipher the messages and symbols the killer leaves at crime scenes and prevent further murders? Will he accept Tom Waaler' s offer? And will he manage to return his personal life to normal? Harry is starting to get really hot.
