Yorkshire, 1845
A young woman disappears without a trace from the Chester estate. All that’s left behind is a lot of blood and the spectre of shameful rumours about the state of her marriage. A few miles away across the moors, the news reaches three sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë. They are horrified by the bloodthirsty nature of the tale, but at the same time, deep down, they are captivated by it.
Desperate to find out what really happened at the estate, they set off together for the scene of the crime. There, they are struck by several disturbing inconsistencies – for example, the complete absence of any effort to investigate the case. The sisters resolve that the matter will only find absolution through their ingenuity, vivacity and boundless imagination. For if they do not try to uncover the fate of Elizabeth Chester, no one will.
The path to the truth is a thorny one, especially in a society that believes a woman’s place is in the home by the stove, not somewhere out on the moors, frantically chasing clues. But the sisters are unshakeable in their determination – despite the ever-present danger, they want to uncover the true story of the lost bride at any cost. Even the ultimate one.
