The Missing

The story of a man lost in the world

The story of a young man travelling to America by ship, who gradually comes to live with his friend in America. Like Kafka's other works, the epic part here is very subtle, serving instead to express the feeling of being an innocent man condemned, hopelessly lost.

In this state, however, Kafka does not shy away from humorous moments that pull us out of the pathological feeling and actually allow us to come to terms with it. The unfinished nature of this work is not a detriment, since alongside the idea of condemnation, any natural conclusion is unnecessary...

Kafka's novel The Man Who Disappeared was not published during the author's lifetime. It was published in 1927 from his estate—like The Trial and The Castle before it—by his friend and first editor, Max Brod.

The novel The Man Who Disappeared was long published under the title America, which Brod himself gave it, claiming that this was how he and Kafka referred to it in their conversations: Amerika – Roman, the American novel. However, Kafka never used the title "America" in his writings; he always called it "The Man Who Disappeared". His title should be respected, not least because it undoubtedly expresses the essential meaning of the work—the story of a man who got lost in the world.
