The album was recorded during a turbulent period for the band, with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards publicly feuding. Despite this, the album was a commercial success, reaching number one in the United States and the United Kingdom. The album's lead single, "Fool to Cry", peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Black and Blue is generally considered one of the band's weaker albums, but has been praised for its blues-rock influences.
