How Do PlayStation 5 Models Different?

The PlayStation 5 is available in two variants - PlayStation 5 and Playstation 5 Digital Edition. Both feature the same performance, hardware configuration and, to some extent, the same design. What makes them different is the presence of an optical drive - the Digital Edition does not have it. What is each of the models intended for?

PlayStation 5 with Optical Drive

The classic PlayStation 5 model is intended either for a more conservative group of gamers who prefer physical copies of games to their digital distribution, or for those who use their game console as a Blu-ray player as it still comes equipped with a disc drive. You can recognize this version at first sight by its asymmetrical design, which is the result of the presence of an opening for optical discs.

PlayStation 5 Digital Edition

We find ourselves in the third decade of the 21st century, which is also manifested in the video game industry. More than three quarters of all purchased copies of video games reach players digitally. This phenomenon also affects consoles, with the PlayStation 5 giving its users a choice. Those who install games primarily through their Internet connection will be able to save and purchase Digital Edition for the PlayStation 5 without an optical drive.

Processor (CPU) - Like the fourth generation of this game console, the PlayStation 5 comes equipped with a processor made by AMD. But a lot has changed since 2013, and AMD introduced the Zen and Zen 2 architectures. And it is the Zen 2 architecture that the PS5 processor is built on - it can be said that it is based on the highly successful AMD Ryzen 38xx series. It would be very difficult to come up with a better performance basis of a next-generation console.
Graphics Processor (GPU) - A graphics processor is what powers the entire next-generation experience. Surely, other parts of hardware are also important, but the visual side of the game and its smooth running is mainly taken care of by the GPU (with the help of the CPU). And the PlayStation 5 GPU is truly a symbol of a new generation. Compared to the PS4, it is more than 5 times more powerful.
Storage - the PlayStation 5 comes with an SSD, which exceeds the speed of older HDDS many times. In practice, this means significantly shorter loading times, but also new possibilities for game worlds, which can be rid of loading sequences.

Old generation consoles (PS4) are no longer keeping up with the technical capabilities of game developers. As the graphics of games and their worlds evolve, the need for more powerful hardware grows stronger. This is exactly what the next generation of consoles offers. What becomes possible with it?

4K Resolution at 60 fps

The new PlayStation 5 offers visual experience we could only dream of before. It supports games with a resolution of 3840×2160px (4K) at 60 frames per second. This ensures that games will be smooth and extremely detailed at the same time. Selected titles can be played on the PlayStation 5 even at 120 fps, a frame rate we've never seen on consoles before.

Ray tracing in Real Time

How to approach reality in games? In recent years, ray tracing technology has proven to be a good way. It enhances the game's graphics by mimicking the ways in which light is spread in the real world. As a result, the game world is not only effective, but also believable. In the past, ray tracing was possible only with the most powerful computers, but soon it will be available to everyone thanks to the PlayStation 5.

Games for PlayStation 5

As before on the PS4, you can play all the big game titles on the PlayStation 5. An almost inexhaustible library of great experiences awaits you, including well-known multiplatform series such as FIFA, Call Of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Battlefield or Grand Theft Auto. At the same time, you can look forward to games that are exclusive to the PlayStation consoles only - Uncharted, God Of War, Last of Us and many others.

On the PlayStation 5, you'll not only play games created exclusively for the next-gen, but also most of those for the PlayStation 4. The PS5 is backward compatible, so it has a huge supply of great games since its release. You can easily play Doom Eternal, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Fortnite.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The sequel to the very successful game Marvel's Spider-Man from 2018 will put you in the role of a new hero. As Spider-Man, Miles Morales has spider abilities similar to those acquired by Peter Parker. In addition, he is endowed with camouflage and electrical pulses, which he can use to neutralize his opponents. The game will be released together with the PlayStation 5 at the end of 2020.

Horizon Forbidden West

We have already encountered the original world of the future ruled by robotic creatures in Horizon Zero Dawn. On the PlayStation 5, we will be able to play its sequel in which the main heroine Aloy needs to save the world. The visual of the original part already pushed the limits of the consoles of that time, so with the performance of the PS5, there is no doubt that Horizon Forbidden West will offer an experience that has never been seen before.

Gran Turismo 7
