The Pied Piper - DVD
The ancient legend of the man with the pipe has no beginning and no end. For centuries, the Pied Piper has wandered from town to town, his face taking on countless forms. In the mysterious streets of old Prague, his story came to life for just a single day, perhaps only to become a film.
He appeared like a phantom at the turn of a year and vanished just as suddenly. In his first steps through the city, he saw Agnes, Kristián, and their future wedding witnesses driving around churches in an open-top red convertible, begging for a wedding ceremony. The girl, with a wreath in her hair, carries a new life under her heart. But they are turned away everywhere. The man with the fujara and long coat, gifted with the strange ability to bring people purification, had never known love until now. For both him and Agnes, their meeting is like a bolt from the blue. Kristián calls his beloved's name in vain, and in vain the devil sets traps for them. In that frantic New Year's Eve, a bond was born, but it is one that must be redeemed. Everyone here loses something, everyone must give something up.
Krysař (The Pied Piper), inspired by Viktor Dyk's novella of the same name and Daniel Landa's musical, is a distinctive and original cinematic reflection on the old legend. When asked why the film was essentially shot "live" over a 24-hour period, F. A. Brabec – co-writer, cinematographer, and director all in one – replied: "I tried to find a key to adapting The Pied Piper that would preserve the strong, emotional love story while avoiding creating 'just' a classic period piece. The extreme shooting conditions, where everyone had to give their absolute all, helped to intensify the emotional penetration under the skin of all the characters. There was no room for falsehood, no time for it. We played with natural exhaustion, with the cold, and with the obligation to finish something. I believe we achieved greater authenticity and expressiveness in the acted scenes, and that the viewer will be drawn into the story with the same commitment as the entire film crew."
The fastest feature film ever made in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
