451 degrees Fahrenheit

The most famous work of a science fiction classic in a new translation

451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns. In Bradbury's dark vision of the future, firefighters are equipped not with water sprinklers but flamethrowers, destroying the last testament to free thought - books. Until the day firefighter Guy Montag starts asking himself some disturbing questions...

The novel is published in a newly revised translation with an introduction by Ray Bradbury. The book is supplemented by an original afterword by Josef Škvorecký to the first Czech edition and an essay by František Novotný to the current updated edition.

"I owe Ray Bradbury a lot!"
Stephen King

"Ray Bradbury is the Louis Armstrong of science fiction literature."
Kingsley Amis

"I think I've read everything Ray Bradbury ever wrote."
Federico Fellini

Ray Bradbury

He was born on August 22, 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois. After graduating from high school, he published his own magazine, Futuria Fantasia, for which he wrote almost all the articles and stories himself. However, he soon became a contributor to major magazines such as Esquire, Collier's and the Saturday Evening Post. His short story collections The Martian Chronicles (1950) and The Illustrated Man (1951) are considered classics of the sicence fiction genre, but they are also milestones of 20th century American literature.

In 1953, the novel 451 Degrees Fahrenheit was published, which Bradbury wrote while still on a rented typewriter in the university library. The novel was acclaimed around the world, and Francois Truffaut made a film based on it in 1966. Ray Bradbury was a multi-faceted author, writing children's books, poems, essays, plays and film scripts. He died on 5 June 2012.

"The basic idea for writing this book is hidden deep in my childhood, when my fascination with libraries began. When I was seven years old, I couldn't imagine anything more beautiful and exciting than going to the library every Monday night with my brother Skip and checking out eight or ten books. The librarian told me that I certainly wouldn't read that many books, but I always contradicted her: Oh, yes, you bet. I'll be back in two or three days and I'll borrow another ten! And then, much later, my fascination combined with the idea that libraries should be protected. When I was thirty, I wrote a short story called 'The Pedestrian'. It was set in the future and told the story of a man who was arrested for going for a walk. The story came out in print, and I liked it, and I went back to it later and sent the walker on a night walk again in my typewriter. In the process, the pedestrian met a girl named Clarissa McClellan, and she struck up a conversation with him. The basis of the novel 451 degrees Fahrenheit was in place."
