At the start of the book, we learn about the mysterious and horrifying end of a scientific expedition—an end mysteriously intertwined with future events and the manipulative practices of a secret government agency known as the Central.
Many years later, the materials concerning the expedition fall into the hands of a Central agent, Jim. The strange impression he gets from the materials intensifies when he finds himself in the field on the so-called Forgotten Coast. Along with a young and inexperienced colleague, he gradually discovers that he is not only dealing with a group of dangerous eccentrics studying paranormal phenomena, but also that the mysterious Renegade, responsible for the tragic fate of that long-ago expedition, is once again active in the area.
The story culminates with the dispatch of the first expedition into Area X, beyond the mysterious barrier that has cut off the former Forgotten Coast from the outside world. Through the eyes of an elite yet eccentric agent, we watch as a well-trained team attempts to find an “off switch” in the uncertain, shifting landscape that would restore the territory to its former state. But one way or another, Area X absorbs and marks everything that crosses its border…
