Ask the devil

You cannot escape the past - it will overtake you and wait for you at the end of the world.

Frantisek Horak was nicknamed Red Rage. That was during the previous regime, when everyone was still afraid of his investigative methods. That was when the strange suicide of the young man occurred, by jumping from a rock with only his shoes left on top.

But all that is now forgotten. Horák is a pensioner who lives in the North Bohemian town of Ústí nad Labem and hopes no one recognizes him anymore. His only solace is the closed religious community and the Pastor who leads it. But then strange signs begin to appear, as if the devil is not just a symbolic figure, but someone who can actually stand in man's way. And with the devil, the past is also slowly returning. The day of reckoning is approaching.

Michal Vrba caught our attention with his short story collection Around Jacob, which was nominated for the Magnesia Litera Award last year. While his short stories have historically covered a long period from the Middle Ages to the present, this time the author comes up with a tight prose that combines the social novel with detective techniques and fantasy motifs.

They wrote about the book Ask the Devil

Ask the Devil is a readable yet clever book about the past, guilt, and what can happen to the world when we don't pay attention.

Jan Němec, editor of the book

I couldn't stop reading, so the book only lasted less than a day. Unlike the previous comment, I was not disturbed by devils and spirituality. On the contrary, it was so believable that I want to go to nearby Bychory to see if there is a stone standing on a stone. But I'd rather stay home, just in case. Readable, suspenseful, I recommend it and look forward to Michal's next book.

Novel Apocalypse. God's mills grind slowly and surely, or Red rage simply cannot escape the past. Nothing will be forgotten. The author put himself into it without pretensions, roughly, thrillingly. It alternates the line of the bastard and the story of his victim in a very interesting way. In addition, excellent realities of the Ústí region. Hilarious book. And the ending is the best of all.

I finished, I snatched every spare moment for this new Michal book. He is and is not Vrba, again he connects the time planes perfectly and again he is surprisingly different. The wonderful character of František Horák is full of contradictions, for a while I had the feeling that it was easy to condemn the Esteban and suddenly that feeling turned into pity for him and understanding and back to damnation. A beautiful book with a wonderful image of the blue eyes of death. I just couldn't get over the personified devils, the ghostly stuff was a bit disturbing. And so I'll take one star off for you, master. I'm still looking forward to the sequel to Slingshot, will there be a trilogy?
