Immortalised as the Band of Brothers, they showed unprecedented bravery in the face of the enemy during the liberation of Europe. Their commander was Dick Winters, who his men called “the best combat commander of the Second World War”. This is his story – told for the first time in his own words.
On D-Day, Winters parachuted into France and took command of Easy Company after their original commander was killed. He led the unit through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany. Together, they liberated the Kaufering concentration camp and captured the Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. During this campaign, every member of the unit was wounded. After brief service during the Korean War, Winters became a successful businessman. He became famous thanks to Stephen Ambrose's book, Band of Brothers, and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries. Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters also includes the untold stories of his fellow soldiers.
As the only one to remain with Easy Company from their entry into combat until the end of the war, and as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, only he could write this moving tribute to the human spirit.
