Black Abbot
A classic romance and detective story.
Abandoned ruins, underground passages, and the mysterious phantom of the Black Abbot. Add to that the curse of a noble family, a hidden treasure, and a beautiful damsel in distress. The typical ingredients of a classic romance and detective story from the pen of Edgar Wallace.
“To say that Fossaway is haunted is a miserable, nonsensical lie,” fumes Lord Harry Chelford when he finds out his servants are talking about the phantom of the Black Abbot. Yet even the London newspapers write of an invisible being whose devilish screams and howls echo throughout the countryside. According to legend, seven hundred years ago, Hubert of Redruth, the Abbot of Chelfordbury, was murdered on the orders of the second Earl of Chelford. Before he died, however, he managed to hide a treasure of immense value in the abbey's cellars. Harry Chelford is obsessed with finding it, but his younger brother Dick also wants to discover where the treasure is located. The charming Leslie Gine, Harry's fiancée, enters the scene. The tangled relationships and the search for the elixir of life and the full treasury form the thrilling plot of this romantic detective story with elements of a gothic novel.
