Mercy Thompson, arguably the most popular urban fantasy series written by a female author at the moment, has expanded to include an eighth volume, with the traditionally gorgeous cover by Daniel Dos Santos. Mercy will be Broken by Night this time, which promises a lot... Yet little was missing, and American Patricia Briggs, the literary mother of this tough coyote-skinned woman, would probably never have ascended to the pedestal of one of the most popular contemporary writers of fantasy. From time to time, it is simply worth listening to the murmurs of the reader's wishes and leaving what the author thought was the only possible (in this case, the realm of classic fantasy).
The eighth Mercy Thompson story might seem more intimate than is usual for this series: The reader enters the story through a phone call from Mercy's ex-wife Adam, who is being stalked by her current boyfriend. And since men like to put on their knight's armour at times like this, even if the person in question is no longer the lady of their heart, serious trouble is brewing...
If it had just stayed with Adam's ex-wife Christy nanominating herself into Mercy's territory, and if she'd just tried to get the werewolf alpha back - the feisty skinwoman would have handled that with the same bravado as fixing the engine of a crippled Mustang. But the rapist Christy has brought to Mercy's doorstep is no ordinary stalker.
Inside the human body is a creature that has set out to destroy everything Mercy Thompson cares about. Thus, in the novel Broken by Night, legions of loyal readers will find exactly what they have been looking forward to since the previous, seventh installment in the series: beloved characters, their increasingly tangled relationship entanglements, gritty action and equally wild eroticism. Patricia Briggs simply created a recipe where the ingredients are mixed in the right proportions - and that is why she is still at the very top of genre literature today.

Patricia Briggs' first novel, Masques, was published in 1993. The book was not a success and the author's career almost ended before it began. The second novel, Riallo's Game (1995), fortunately sold much better and the writing career slowly took off. The growing popularity of the author's books, along with her ability to create vivid, compelling characters, inspired a publisher to ask her to try her hand at writing modern urban fantasy. Briggs accepted the challenge and signed a contract for a series of novels, with Mercy Thompson as the protagonist. Smoke Demon (2020) is the latest installment in the successful franchise and universe, the twelfth in the series. The first book in the Mercy Thompson series (Moon Song) made the USA Today bestseller list. The second volume, Blood Ties, made the New York Times bestseller list for a change. The Iron Kiss, the third book, even took the first place in this prestigious ranking. The success has been so enormous that further episodes of this still unfinished series are in the making. The author has also come up with a companion series, Alfa & Omega, also published by Fantom Print along with the main Mercedes Thompson series.
