Thanks to an eyewitness, this could be an easy case, but Chief Inspector Oldroyd is not so lucky. The shooter manages to escape and all efforts to track him down are in vain. In the course of the investigation, however, a whole host of disgruntled people emerge who didn't like Fraser very much. To make matters worse, another murder occurs. This time the victim is local shop owner Peter Gorton - and once again this crime has seemingly no cause. Can Oldroyd find the connection between the two murders and catch the perpetrator before anyone else dies?

J. R. Ellis came from a working-class family, but that didn't stop him from going to Oxford University and becoming a teacher. He has always been interested in mysteries, the supernatural and unsolved crimes, and during his cantorial years he wrote children's plays and ghost stories. However, he did not begin to devote himself fully to his work until his retirement. His Murder in Yorkshire series is intrinsically linked to the county where Ellis lives. He was inspired by the mystery novels of Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, in the style of the locked room mysteries, or the Jonathan Creek series. He believes that for detective novels it is not only important who committed the crime, but also how they did it. Although he writes about murder, he avoids overly brutal scenes, preferring to emphasize a light style, elements of humor, and a well thought-out plot.
