Divine comedy

Dante's masterpiece, in which the protagonist journeys through Hell and Purgatory accompanied by Virgil, and then Paradise, where he is guided by his deceased beloved Beatrice, before finally returning to Earth.

The epic consists of a total of one hundred cantos. The first canto of the Inferno serves as an introduction to the entire epic, and each of the subsequent parts contains thirty-three cantos. In total, the Comedy has 14,233 verses. The cantos are written in terza rima, i.e., three-line stanzas: a tercet is a type of stanza consisting of three ten-syllable verses, or eleven-syllable in the case of a feminine ending, originating from Italy (first appearing in the Comedy) with an ingenious rhyme scheme of aba-bcb-cdc-ded.

The triadic structure allows the plot to be built on a thesis-antithesis-synthesis model. It is possible that the three-line scheme was inspired by the Holy Trinity. Following Dante's example, Petrarch and Boccaccio also began to use it. It builds on the Provençal sirventes.
