Letters on snack paper
A charming, poetic novel about two people who are like fire and water, about the clash between love and freedom, and about independence and the desire to belong.
Against the backdrop of a tender love story, Carsten Henn seeks the answer to the question of whether we determine the direction of our own lives, or whether we let others decide for us; whether we are guided by fate, chance or our own free will.
Who still writes letters these days? Real, handwritten letters on paper? Kati Waldstein, for one, who, on the threshold of forty, has decided to start a new life. Through letters written on wrapping paper, she says goodbye to everyone who has influenced her life in some way – for better or for worse. A kind shop assistant, a strict teacher, an ex-husband.
One day she meets Severin, a somewhat mysterious homeless man. An unfortunate incident for which he was responsible has left this piano tuner living on the streets. However, he firmly believes that Kati and her home town are his destiny.
It seems they are made for each other, and yet they can't find their way to one another until Kati realises that she doesn't have to say goodbye to the past to start a new future, and Severin understands that he will only have a future if he accepts his past.
