Lake of Love
A feel-good novel as sweet as a Belgian praline
Marie leaves Prague with a full car and an empty heart, determined to put corruption and professional disappointment behind her. A prestigious position as a judge and longed-for peace await her in picturesque Bruges, Belgium. But the past has a long reach. Behind the mysterious green door of her new home lives Pierre – a charismatic lawyer connected to the powerful firm that nearly ruined Marie's life in Prague. As the city is cloaked in Christmas lights and the scent of cinnamon, Marie finds herself in the middle of a dangerous power game.
At stake is not only her career but also the fate of an innocent person. Pierre becomes her closest ally and her fated love, but can Marie truly trust him when they stand on opposite sides in the courtroom? Fortunately, she is not alone – amidst the aroma of baked goods and Christmas lights, a new family of friends is forming around her…
Iveta D. Chmiel
Much like her protagonist Marie, Iveta D. Chmiel feels at home in an international environment, which allows her to depict the settings of not only Prague but also, for example, Bruges in Belgium with extraordinary authenticity. Her great loves are boats and cooking. She dreams of one day opening a small shop – the kind that smells of candles, fresh flowers, and homemade pastries. A cosy place just big enough for people to get to know each other better. As a former diplomat, and happily married to a diplomat for over twenty years, she has travelled the world – from Nigeria through Russia, Australia, Hungary, and Slovenia to Kuwait – collecting many of her own stories along the way. As she says with a smile, she feels a little bit at home everywhere the road has taken her.
