The Velvet Years
One family, a thousand disasters – and a revolution to top it off
The pedantic grandfather, Miloš, and his quirky grandmother, Andula, are in a constant battle with grandfather Tomáš, whose only purpose in life is sport, and grandmother Hana, who is mainly interested in herself. In the midst of all this, two young people are finding their way to each other, two people who were never meant to be together and who are unsuccessfully trying to raise their unplanned son, Petr. One family catastrophe follows another, and in the background, the Velvet Revolution is unfolding, turning the lives of each family member upside down. Immerse yourself in a story that will make you laugh, occasionally shake your head in disbelief, or even shed a tear…
Štěpán Javůrek, author of the popular trilogy Sudetský dům, returns with a bittersweet comedy, a book full of gentle humour and the extraordinary experiences of one uncommonly common family.

I was born on 27/09/1987 in Ústí nad Labem. It's where I spent the first years of my life, and I later returned to my grandparents' house in Ústí nad Labem – Skorotice for weekends and holidays whenever I could. I had a wonderful childhood there. Later, we moved to Chomutov, another fateful city in my life. My literary debut Chaloupky (2020) was a huge success with readers and became a bestseller upon its release. In 2021, my social novel Nebe na Perninkem was published, and in 2022, the first part of the novel trilogy Sudetský dům was released.
